See client comments in the Squarespace editor

The SiteViewer for Squarespace extension shows your clients' comments as pins on the page you are editing in Squarespace, with the full list beside it, so you can work through feedback without switching tabs.

Before you start

  • Google Chrome on a computer, or another browser that installs extensions from the Chrome Web Store.
  • A SiteViewer account with the site added as a live website, which needs the Pro or Studio plan or the Studio trial. Once a site is added, its pins show on any plan. Replying, resolving, moving pins and leaving comments from the editor are part of Client feedback, on the Studio plan and the Studio trial. Replying, moving pins and leaving comments also need Collect comments switched on, on the project's Comments tab in SiteViewer.

Install it and sign in

  1. Add it from the Chrome Web Store. Open SiteViewer for Squarespace and choose Add to Chrome.
  2. Sign in once. A small SiteViewer window opens by itself. If you are already signed in to SiteViewer in this browser, it connects and closes on its own. If not, press Sign in to SiteViewer, log in to SiteViewer in the tab that opens, and the window carries on by itself.
  3. Open your site in the Squarespace editor. Your clients' comments appear as pins on the page, with the Comments panel beside it, and the SiteViewer logo sits at the right end of the editor's top bar.

Closed the window, or signed out later? Click the SiteViewer icon in your browser's toolbar and choose Sign in to SiteViewer. If you cannot see the icon, open Chrome's Extensions menu (the jigsaw piece) and pin SiteViewer for Squarespace.

If Chrome says "Proceed with caution"

Chrome shows this for every new extension publisher to people who have its Enhanced protection turned on. It is about how long a publisher has been on the Chrome Web Store, not about the extension itself, and it stops appearing after a few months. Choose Continue to install.

The SiteViewer logo in the editor

The logo at the right end of the editor's top bar is your switch, and it tells you how things stand:

  • Orange: your clients' comments are showing. Click it to hide the pins, the Comments panel and the bar at the bottom of the page in one go. Click again to bring them back.
  • Grey: the comments are hidden on this site. Click it to show them.
  • Grey with an amber dot: something needs you. You are not signed in, the site is not in SiteViewer yet, or SiteViewer could not be reached. Click it and a sheet opens where the Comments panel would be, with the way forward: Sign in, Add this site to SiteViewer, or Try again.

The Comments panel needs an editor window at least 700 pixels wide. In a narrower window the pins show on their own, and the logo opens a small window instead, with a Show comments on this site switch and your settings.

Working through feedback

  • Click a pin to open its comment right there on the page. Reply, react, attach a picture or a PDF, assign it to someone on your team, or resolve it. A reply reaches your client just as it would from SiteViewer, and you can edit your own message for 15 minutes after sending it.
  • Hover a pin to outline what it points at. If it points at the wrong spot, drag it to the right one. An amber pin with a dashed edge means the part of the page it pointed at has changed since it was left.
  • Work down the list in the Comments panel. Switch between Open and Resolved, narrow it to Desktop or Mobile, or show this page only. Click a comment to jump to its pin, even on another page of the site (if you are editing, save your changes first). A New label marks comments where someone else has written since you last had the panel open. Opening a comment does not clear it: to mark them all as seen, press the note above the tabs that counts what is new since you looked.
  • Leave a comment of your own: press Leave a comment at the foot of the panel, click the spot on the page, write it in the box and press Comment. Your comment then opens at its pin. For another one, press Leave a comment again. To stop without adding one, press Cancel comment.
  • Want more room? Collapse the panel to a slim edge (hover the edge to peek at the list), or undock it so it floats and drag it by its header. Drag the panel's left edge to make it wider or narrower.

Settings

Click the cog at the top of the Comments panel. Your settings open inside the panel, and the back arrow returns you to the comments.

  • Your account, with Sign out.
  • Show resolved pins keeps pins on the page for comments already dealt with.
  • Private replies adds a Private switch to replies and new comments, for notes to your team that your client never sees.
  • Outline what a comment points at when you hover a pin.
  • Tell me about new comments pops up a note in the corner when a new comment arrives while you edit.
  • Open in SiteViewer and Help with the extension, which brings you back here.

Hide everything for a clean screen

Click the SiteViewer logo in the editor's top bar, or the hide icon (an eye with a line through it) at the end of the bar at the bottom of the page, or press Alt+Shift+S (Option+Shift+S on a Mac). The Show comments on this site switch, from the SiteViewer icon in your browser's toolbar, does the same. They are all one switch, remembered for each site in this browser, and hiding never clears what is marked New.

To bring everything back, click the logo again (it stays in the editor's top bar) or press the shortcut.

Add a site that is not in SiteViewer yet

Open the site in the Squarespace editor. The SiteViewer logo shows grey with an amber dot: click it, and a sheet opens beside the page.

  1. Check the address and the workspace. If you run more than one workspace, choose which one the site goes in.
  2. Check the project name. It is filled in with the site's title from Squarespace. Change it if you like, or clear it and SiteViewer names the project from the address.
  3. Press Add this site to SiteViewer. The pins and the Comments panel start on the page straight away, with no reload.

If the site is not public yet, SiteViewer asks for its site password. Enter it and press Add with this password: your clients use the same password to open the review. A site set to Private needs switching to Password protected in Squarespace first, under Site availability.

You can also start from the SiteViewer icon in your browser's toolbar: on a site that is not in SiteViewer yet it offers Add website, which opens SiteViewer with the address filled in for you to check and add.

Adding a live website is on the Pro plan (one website, without Client feedback) and the Studio plan (as many as you like, with Client feedback). If you collaborate on someone else's workspace, ask its owner to add the site.

If something is not showing

  • No pins, and the logo has an amber dot: click the logo to see why, then sign in, add the site, or press Try again.
  • Pins but no Comments panel: the panel only shows in the Squarespace editor, not on the site opened in a tab of its own. In the editor, widen the window to at least 700 pixels, or look for the panel collapsed to a slim edge on the right.
  • Nothing at all, and the logo is grey: the comments are hidden on this site. Click the logo to show them.
  • You can read comments but not reply or add your own: replying, moving pins and leaving comments from the editor are part of Client feedback on the Studio plan, and Collect comments must be on, on the project's Comments tab in SiteViewer.
  • A red ! on the toolbar icon: the extension was signed out. Click the icon and choose Sign in to SiteViewer.

Sign out, or disconnect a browser

Open the cog in the Comments panel and press Sign out, or click the SiteViewer icon in your browser's toolbar and press Sign out there.

To sign the extension out of a browser you no longer use, open SiteViewer, choose Account settings from the account menu at the bottom of the sidebar, and find Connected browsers under Security. Press Review to see each browser, then Sign out the ones you want to disconnect. Changing your SiteViewer password signs the extension out of every browser.
